Elizabeth Sladen, the actress that played Doctor Who’s beloved assistant since 1973, has lost her battle with cancer and passed away on Tuesday at 63, according to a statement from the BBC.

Taking on the role of Sarah Jane Smith opposite Jon Pertwee who played Doctor Who in 1973, Sladen immediately became a firm favorite with fans of the show with her forthright and no-nonsense attitude toward the Doctor and his antics. She continued in the initial role for a further three and a half seasons, eventually working alongside Tom Baker and his representation of the Time Lord.

Over the coming years, Sladen went on the reprise the role of Sarah Jane in numerous shows with the current Doctor, Matt Smith, and his predecessor David Tennant, as well as captaining her own series about her namesake, ‘The Sarah Jane Adventures’.

“I absolutely loved Lis,” said Russel T. Davies, creator of the Sarah Jane Adventures on Tuesday. “She was funny and cheeky and clever and just simply wonderful. The universe was lucky to have Sarah Jane Smith; the world was lucky to have Lis.”
